The recent successful hosting of the 2026 Science Team Competition for Secondary Schools in Jos the Plateau State capital has stimulated the nurturing of the next generation of scientists, innovators, and problem-solvers.
The competition organized by University of Jos, through its Advancement Office and in partnership with Science Olympiad Nigeria has reaffirmed the commitment to nurturing future inventors and skilled leaders.
The two-day event held at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Auditorium, brought together some of the brightest secondary school students from across Jos for an enriching experience of learning, innovation, and healthy competition.
With the theme, “Innovate Now,” the competition was also designed to encourage young people to embrace creativity, critical thinking, and scientific inquiry as tools for addressing real-world challenges.
Beyond testing academic knowledge, the programme sought to expose participants to practical problem-solving approaches and inspire them to view science and technology as pathways to national development and personal growth.
Throughout the competition, students participated in a series of science-based challenges that assessed their analytical abilities, teamwork, ingenuity, and application of scientific principles.
Also, the event created an engaging environment where participants could showcase their talents, exchange ideas, and develop a deeper appreciation for innovation and discovery.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Executive Director of the University of Jos Advancement Office, Professor Sarah Lwahas, reiterated the University’s dedication to promoting educational excellence and creating opportunities that empower young people.
The Professor noted that investing in science education and innovation is essential for building a future driven by knowledge and sustainable development.
According to her, the collaboration with Science Olympiad Nigeria reflects a shared commitment to inspiring students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
In his remarks, the Plateau State Coordinator of Science Olympiad Nigeria, Mr. Omotosho, expressed appreciation to the schools, teachers, and students for their enthusiastic participation.
He emphasized the importance of providing platforms that challenge and motivate young learners, describing the students as the future generation capable of transforming the nation’s narrative through innovation, research, and scientific advancement.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Ishaya Tanko, commended the Advancement Office for initiating and successfully organizing the competition.
Tanko described the University as a citadel of learning committed to fostering academic excellence and innovation at all levels.
He noted that one of the most remarkable aspects of the competition was its focus on young students whose ideas and talents could shape future scientific breakthroughs and inventions.
The Vice Chancellor then donated the sum of 350,000 to outstanding teams, which he further broke it down as 150,000 to the first position, 100,000 for second position and 50,000 for third position.
Beyond the recognition and awards presented to high-performing teams, the competition achieved a broader objective of cultivating curiosity, collaboration, and a passion for scientific exploration among participants.
Students also earned the opportunity to represent Plateau State at the national stage of the competition scheduled to take place in Lagos later in August, further motivating them to strive for excellence.
Others who expressed their views pointed out that the successful hosting of the 2026 Science Team Competition represents another milestone in the University of Jos’ efforts to engage meaningfully with the wider community while contributing to the intellectual development of young Nigerians.
By providing a platform that encourages innovation, it was further established that through critical thinking and scientific excellence, the University continues to play a vital role in preparing future leaders and innovators who will contribute to national growth and global progress.
Furthermore, other stakeholders pointed out that the competition was more than an academic contest, saying it was an investment in the future, and that through initiatives such as this, the University of Jos is helping to inspire a generation of young minds to dream boldly, innovate responsibly, and become active contributors to societal transformation.
