The Chairmen of the 23 Local Government Councils in Kaduna State have unanimously approved the payment of Group Life Insurance premiums for local government employees across the state, in a move aimed at strengthening workers’ welfare and social protection.
The approval was granted during a meeting of the Joint Allocation Accounts Committee (JAAC) following a presentation by the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Pension Bureau on the importance of the Group Life Insurance Scheme and the need to comply with statutory provisions designed to protect workers and their families.
Speaking at the meeting, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs commended the council chairmen for demonstrating commitment to the welfare of local government workers through the collective decision.
He described the unanimous approval as a reflection of responsible leadership and a clear indication that the local government councils remain committed to safeguarding the interests of their workforce.
The commissioner said the administration of Governor remains focused on improving workers’ welfare through policies and programmes that promote social protection, security and productivity within the public service.
According to him, the state government has continued to implement initiatives aimed at enhancing the well-being of workers while ensuring that their statutory entitlements are protected.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Pension Bureau expressed appreciation to the commissioner and the 23 local government chairmen for their prompt approval of the premium payment.
He noted that the Group Life Insurance Scheme serves as a critical safety net by providing financial support to the families of employees who die while in active service, thereby cushioning the economic impact of such losses.
The pension bureau boss said the approval would guarantee continuous coverage for local government workers and ensure compliance with existing regulations governing employee welfare and insurance benefits.
He added that the decision demonstrates the shared commitment of both the Kaduna State Government and the local government councils to prioritising the welfare of workers and fulfilling obligations relating to employee benefits.
The Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs lauded the council chairmen for what it described as a landmark decision and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that improve the welfare, security and productivity of local government employees across the state.
