Since the initiative birthed three years ago, with its third anniversary exactly commemorated in December 2025, the Plateau Cultural Carnival is not only redefining cultural understanding but stimulating tourism.
This unique milestone in Nigeria’s cultural landscape, is firmly positioning Plateau State as a rising national and continental hub for cultural tourism, creative excellence, and social integration.
Happening in an era where societies compete for global attention, Plateau State is now therefore charting a bold new course — one where culture is not just celebrated, but strategically positioned as an economic force and bedrock.
Hence, the Cultural Carnival is rapidly transforming the state into a thriving hub of heritage, creativity and commerce, because beyond the spectacle, something more significant was unfolding, as it has became a convergence point for tradition and contemporary expression by drawing visitors, creatives, investors and leading figures from Nollywood.
FROM CELEBRATION TO ECONOMIC STRATEGY
Across Africa, tourism is evolving. The future belongs to destinations that can package identity, history and creativity into structured, sustainable economic ecosystems.
The Plateau Cultural Carnival is therefore built on that understanding.
With December officially positioned as the state’s festive season under the leadership of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, Plateau is deliberately cultivating a December-driven tourism economy — one that fuels hospitality, stimulates enterprise and attracts creative investment. This is not accidental. It is intentional.
The carnival is this designed to: increase domestic and diaspora tourism, strengthen hotel and hospitality revenue, empower small businesses and vendors and showcase Plateau’s rich cultural diversity. It is also meant at positioning Jos, the state capital, as a creative production destination.
For the past three years therefore, December in Jos has taken on new meaning — marked by increased arrivals, bustling commercial activity and renewed national attention.
A highpoint of the celebration is often when stakeholders from Nollywood step into the city in their numbers to honour it with their celebrity presence in order to advance the carnival and give it a global outlook.
Plateau’s temperate climate, iconic rock formations and scenic landscapes tremendously offer a cinematic canvas that attracts the admiration of the stars. In this way, culture is no longer passive heritage. It is active capital.
A PERSPECTIVE ON THE CONVENER
The carnival is convened by Debrah Jalmet, a committed cultural advocate driven by heritage preservation, youth empowerment and social cohesion.
According to her, the three-day carnival always transcended festivity to become a living expression of identity, unity, and collective purpose.
“Through music, dance, fashion, art, cuisine, and storytelling, Plateau State confidently projected its cultural richness to the nation and the global community.
“As widely acknowledged, culture widens both the mind and the spirit, a truth vividly reflected throughout the carnival.
“The last December carnival commenced with a vibrant street parade, transforming the city of Jos into a moving canvas of colour, rhythm, and shared celebration.
“The atmosphere was electric as residents and visitors alike participated in the ‘See Plateau Tour’, pausing daily routines to engage with culture as a unifying force.
“In moments like this, it became evident that culture remains the glue that holds communities together,” she said.
Jalmet pointed out that the carnival is a blueprint for the continent in redefining cultural tourism in Africa, adding that the continent requires more than music and parades at carnival, to include structure, vision and scalability.
“From the vibrant cultural displays at Secretariat Junction to high-energy street concerts that united thousands, the Plateau Cultural Carnival demonstrated how identity, unity and enterprise can coexist within a commercially viable framework,” she added.
The event concluded with a high-energy concert that drew massive crowds, reinforcing the carnival’s role not just as entertainment, but as a catalyst for civic pride, social bonding, and local economic activity.
